- <p> Readers of romance fiction are a determined lot. They made
- Rosamunde Pilcher's September No. 1 on the New York Times'
- best-seller list two weeks before its publication date. "I was
- absolutely astounded," says Pilcher, 65, the author of 1988's
- The Shell Seekers, which has sold more than 3 million copies.
- Pilcher lives in Scotland, the setting for September, and is
- already plotting her 15th novel. When it's done, she'll return
- to writing short stories because, she says, "they are more
- satisfying. It's so quick. It's like having an affair instead of
- getting married."
